Continuing a Pattern in Excel

Excel's Autofill feature allows users to efficiently continue a pattern across cells. This feature detects the established pattern in the initial cells and propagates it to fill additional cells.

Using Autofill

Activate Autofill by selecting a cell range that contains the pattern and dragging the fill handle. Excel will fill the cells, continuing the pattern based on the selected data.

Flash Fill

The Flash Fill feature in Excel automatically recognizes patterns and fills in data accordingly. Simply type the start of the pattern and use Flash Fill to complete it.

SEQUENCE Function

For numerical patterns, such as customer IDs, use the SEQUENCE function. This function generates a sequence of numbers that can represent a pattern.

Power Query

Power Query can automate pattern replication. It is especially useful for complex or non-standard patterns that are not easily handled by other Excel features.

INDIRECT with SEQUENCE

Combine the INDIRECT function with SEQUENCE to create flexible patterns. This method enhances pattern control and customization in Excel.

Note that the Auto Fill feature does not support simultaneous data entry across multiple worksheets.
